Newsletter March 2009

Work is not a four letter word.

March is upon us and I am noticing that many people who weren’t happy with their work last year and were hoping things would get better in 2009 are coming to the realization that that isn’t going to happen.   If you are feeling that your work is getting less and less pleasant and tolerable, it may be time to think about coming for some individual coaching or signing up for a group coaching process that will help you to work out what is working for you at work and what isn’t, and give yourself permission to make new choices (and big or small changes) to bring the joy back to how you spend your days.   See the end of this newsletter for more information on options for you.

We spend so much of our time at work, and so much of our self expression and self actualization is caught up with our work, that to work at something that we do not enjoy or gain meaning from can feel like a punishment rather than a reward.  And really our work should be as close to a reward as possible.

Personal and leadership development coach Robin Sharma captures it beautifully in the following quote from his best-selling book The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari:

The secret of happiness is simple: find out what you truly love to do and then direct all your energy towards doing it.  Once you do this, abundance flows into your life and all your desires are filled with ease and grace.

And it is so simple.  If you do what you love then you love what you do, and it feels easy and rewarding.   I know this is true because I live it.  Before I gave myself permission to become a Life Coach, I did work that was important and interesting but that I did not love.  I used to have to set my alarm clock for two hours earlier than I needed to get up in the morning because that is how long it took me to drag myself back into the world.  Now that I love what I do, I wake up spontaneously every morning, feeling rested and refreshed and excited to start my day.   And my work does not feel like work – it feels like breathing.

I can almost hear some of you thinking “well, that is all very well but it is too risky for me to leave the job that is sucking the life blood out of me:  the economy is tanking and I have a lifestyle to uphold and a goldfish to feed”.  I hear you and I sympathise.  In fact, I even empathise.  But I also know that if you wait for the perfect time to make changes, you may be waiting a very long time.

What action can you take today to make your work feel more meaningful and rewarding?
