Marching On
I wonder if March is so named because many of us feel as though we don’t have a choice about the speed and direction at which we are moving at this time of year. We are often so busy keeping time and staying in step, that we don’t allow ourselves to stop and enjoy the view; have a rest and find some nourishment. We may not even allow ourselves to think about if the formation we are working so hard to keep up with is even headed in the direction we want to go.
It is so easy to get swept up by the tide and to go along with things that we are expected to do, think and say, that we frequently forget what it is that we want to do, think and say. So often, I hear my clients say things like “I don’t know how I got here” or “I haven’t thought about what makes me happy for years” or even “I always wanted to be a writer/artist/doctor but never found the time for it and now I feel like it is too late”. These insights are more likely to be accompanied by pain and disappointment than by joy and euphoria; it is extremely painful to recognise that we have given our dreams away.
How do we get to a point in our lives where we realise that we have not achieved some – or many – of our most important and heartfelt wishes? By going with the flow, and not allowing ourselves the time and space to really evaluate where we are headed. We get so caught up in the societal pressures to be busy, to make progress, to get ahead, to make something of our lives that we forget to ensure that we make the lives we want. Being ‘out of line’ is seen as a bad thing, but I think it is critical to our happiness and fulfilment to examine our journey through life from an objective space every now and then.
Time has a way of running away with us, and this year seems to be passing particularly rapidly. Already, the light is changing and the approach of winter is becoming apparent; the Autumn solstice is just a couple of weeks away. Now is an excellent time to break stride and step out of line, and make some time for yourself to take stock of your life and where you want to be going. Then you can march to your own tune, and at your own pace, to get yourself there.
If one of your dreams is to be a life coach, we still have a couple of spaces on the Martha Beck Life Coach Training Programme being run in Johannesburg in April. The workshop part of the training will run from 17 to 19 April. Please e-mail Fiona on Fiona@stellarlifedesign.co.za to get more information about the application process.
Do you struggle to ask for help? Feel responsible when someone disappoints you? Believe that it is up to you to make things better at work/at home/in your relationship? You may benefit from the “It’s Never Too Late” Tele-Class. This powerful coaching programme is designed to help participants understand how they got to where they are, and help them to reach their full potential by allowing themselves to make new or different choices. There is one space available on the next programme which runs on four consecutive Tuesdays, 9th to 30th March from 7:30 – 9pm. The classes are held in the comfort of your own home – all you need to do is dial into the call. Please e-mail me quickly if you want more information about the programme!
I hope that March sees you choosing a fabulous destination to march towards!
