What have you done for yourself today?
I strongly believe that we should all have a regular practice to keep us present in our lives. It could be meditation, exercise, painting, singing, dancing or gardening; anything that makes us happy and allows us to centre ourselves regularly. The trick is to keep at it, even when our lives get so busy and exciting that it feels easier to stop for a while. But we are often so much better at making time and space for other people and things, than we are at doing it for ourselves.
Maybe I should just come right out and own this one...I am much better at making time and space for other people and things than for myself.
April was quite a month for me. There was a lot going on. And somewhere between all the excitement and wonderful craziness of those four weeks, I let my daily practice of writing my Morning Pages slip. This morning I settled down with my usual cup of tea and my morning pages journal and got back into it. What a relief! I realised that for the last two weeks I have been feeling fragmented, dis-integrated and – not to put too fine a point on it – completely all over the place.
Partly, this has been to do with the information and excitement overload that I have been enjoying but mostly, I think, it is because I gave up my daily space. No-one asked me to, I just let it slide in favour of other things. Things that seemed more exciting and more important at the time. I was so focussed on the ride that was my April that I forgot to pay attention to the journey. I neglected my mental, emotional and spiritual hygiene. Is it any wonder that I have been physically exhausted as a result?
Writing my Morning Pages is what keeps me grounded. It helps me to make sense of what is going on in my internal and external worlds. It is an oasis of calm and insight that I give myself every day; when I do not allow myself that breathing space, things go awry. When I do not pay enough attention to myself, I am not able to pay enough attention to the people around me.
Not good.
But it will get better. Every day that I write my pages and connect with myself again, I am better able to connect with the people and activities I have been neglecting.
Maybe there is some part of your life that you have been overlooking as a consequence of not paying enough attention to yourself? Take some time to be present for yourself and prepare to be amazed by how much better you are able to be present in all aspects of your life.
May your May be wonderful.

Design Your Life - Saturday 29 May
What is holding you back from living your best life? The Design Your Life workshop helps you assess where you are in your life, where you would like to get to in the upcoming year and how to get there. The workshop will take participants through a process that creates awareness of their limiting beliefs, clarifies their ideal life and provides them with skills to move into action and achieve their best-life goals.
How to Be Heard – Sunday 30 May
This communication skills workshop is designed for people who struggle to consistently communicate from and “Adult” state. Many of us unconsciously assume different roles in different scenarios, and often unknowingly dis-empower ourselves by communicating either from a state of fear and need, or a state of power and control, rather than a neutral one. Based on my extensive research and writing, this workshop combines information with powerful life coaching exercises to help participants communicate calmly and rationally, and command respect in all aspects of their lives.
Is Work Working for You? - Saturday 5 June
We spend up to a third of our time at work and many of us hate every second of that time, sometimes without even realizing it! If you feel depressed and anxious on Sunday nights, grumpy at the thought of being in your office, or would rather stick needles in your eyes than work on the weekend, you may be one of those people. Or maybe there are some aspects of your work that are just not doing it for you anymore?
If you feel there is any need for improvement in your work-life, help is at hand. In just a few hours this workshop will guide you to get in touch with what you really want from your work life and help you to plan how to get it!
It’s Never Too Late Tele-Class - Tuesdays 1, 8, 15, 22 June 7:30 – 9pm SA time
“It’s Never Too Late” is a four week long interactive, e-mail and phone call based programme which combines information on what makes “adult children” (people who grew up in chaotic or unpredictable environments, resulting in very responsible behaviour as children, and sometimes fear-based behaviour as adults) with powerful life coaching exercises to help participants make sense of their past and how it affects their present, in order to enhance and improve their future.
The Adult Child: A User’s Guide – Tuesday 25 May 7:30pm SA time Free Phone-in Information Session
Adult Children often struggle to ask for help and feel responsible for everything and everyone around them. If this sounds like you or someone you know, join the phone-in information session and learn more about Adult Children; what makes them tick, and how to bring about subtle but powerful changes.
Please e-mail me info@stellarlifedesign.co.za for more information or to book your place on the workshops.
